The Cthulhu Idol Project continues with part 3… The detailing of the base.  If you click here you can see the first part of my Cthulhu Project where I’ve got the original sketch of the idol by H.P. Lovecraft himself.

While I like Lovecraft’s stories, his artwork leaves a lot to be desired.  So I simply can’t do a faithful reproduction of the Legrasse Idol from “Call of Cthulhu”.

As you can see I’m taking some artistic liberties with the base.  Adding tentacles and leering monstrous faces on the sides.  I intend to add the cryptic hieroglyphics in after I’m done with the sculpted tentacles.

So far I’ve just got the two sides of the idols base completed.  You’ll notice the upper picture is kind of shiny.  I haven’t cooked it yet to harden it.  You’ve got to cook the Kato clay at 300 degrees for about a half hour to harden the clay.  This is after I smoothed the details with a fine brush and turpentine to knock back my tool marks.

The work on the cthulhu idol continues.  I’ll keep posting up more updates till I get this sucker done.  🙂
