Steamfest post con Wrapup

My Steamfest post con wrapup.  I’m sad to see it over.  It was a really good con for The Zombie Nation comic.  We did well.

My wife and I got there Friday and had a great location right outside the dealer’s room in their artist alley.  The foot traffic was amazing.  I think the people throwing the con were surprised by how many people attended the Steamfest convention.  Hell, I was surprised!  I had no idea how popular Steampunk was in Utah.  Let’s put it this way, I saw in a day and a half more corsets and top hats than I had previously seen in my entire life. …and I have sites bookmarked for such things.

Behind the booth we had a great time.  The great and powerful D. J. Butler (Author of the “Rock Band Fights Evil” saga) sat in with my wife and I.  We even got to hang out with Howard Taylor of Schlock Mercenary.  You can see both of us below doing our best to show our scared expressions to the camera.  Howard was pretty awesome.  Every time I talk to the man he tells me something that changes the whole dynamic of how I do my business.  He should write a book on marketing.

My only complaint with the con was that I would have loved it to be longer because I was doing so well and the heat….. Holy crap the heat.  With that many bodies and Utah’s naturally oppressive atmosphere it got pretty toasty.  Sadly with my extra thick layer of insulation (Fat) I am built for colder temperatures.  I drank three 64 ounce mugs of Mt. Dew on Friday and only went to the restrooms once.

What?  To much information.  Pfft.  It’s good for you, builds character.

Again, I was drawing people as zombies the whole time we were at Steamfest almost without breaks.  In fact I felt bad not being able to go hang out with some of our fans, but we were just so busy.  That’s a good problem to have I suppose though.

I’m still blown away by how much effort people put into their Steampunk costumes and accessories.  Some of them must have taken an incredible amount of time and money.

Just a final word.  Can’t thank the staff of Steamfest enough for having us.  It was a really great convention, totally impressed me.  I can’t wait to go back next year.

100% True Tales of a Cartoonist: Steamfest Edition

Steampunk convention odd conversations

Steamfest if over, sadly. I had a lot of fun and I’ll have to prepare a post all about it later when I’m not so tired. We had an amazing time. Got to hang out with D.J Butler, the awesome writer of the “Rock band fights evil” series.

I have some interesting conversations at conventions. Some are good, some are odd, some are just amusing.  This conversation happened almost word for word while I was hanging out with David at my zombie booth.

I’m relatively certain this lady didn’t mean to actually say that, but it struck me as so odd and funny I couldn’t stop thinking about it. What would a steampunk/victorian handy be like? I imagine a lot of steam, which leads to painful burns. Also there’s the gears and bits of brass…. That’s going to cause some serious chaffing.  You know what I bet it would just hurt. I’m going to have to pass.

Steampunk Zombies at Salt City Steamfest 2012

Steampunk Zombies at Steamfest

Steampunk Zombies are exactly what’s happening today and tomorrow at the Steamfest in Red Lion Hotel in Salt Lake City.

If you are going to be in the area come down and see me I’ll be offering decals, sketches, books, and of course zombie drawings for the convention.  Aside from Steampunk zombies you can just come down for a little Victorian futurism and see people who spend a disturbing amount of time worrying about their very elaborate goggles.

I wear glasses and I payed a ridiculous amount of money for them, but I’m telling you that pales in comparison to how much a Steampunk enthusiast spends on their goggles.

Today’s comic is actually from some magnets I created for Steamfest for their gift bags.

So if you happen to find yourself in the Salt Lake City area today and tomorrow, please stop on by and see me.  I’ll be in the Artist Alley hocking all my zombie products and desperately trying to look cool.  And if you tell me your name and buy a sketch from me I’ll happily add you to my list of people that I stalk.  See, it’s win no matter how you look at it.

Steampunk Zombies are awesome

I’ve been getting into the Steampunk genre lately and of course bringing the undead to it as much as possible.  You can see my earlier attempts at Steampunk Zombies here.  I still think that that is two genres that go pretty well together.  Just have your relentless hoard of the dead be powered by steam and you are good to go.

There’s also been some pretty good fiction cramming these two great tastes together recently that I need to pick up.  I’m not sure when I’ll be able to read them as free time is at a premium these days.

Steamfest 2012 now with Steampunk Zombies

Steamfest 2012 is coming to the Red Lion hotel in Salt Lake City July 27-28 and my steampunk zombies are getting prepared.

Here is a Steampunk illustration of Cthulhu and the Tardis I created for an auction at Steamfest.  This will be available there for your bidding pleasure. I love Steampunk, it’s one of those add on things that makes everything better.  Add Steampunk to something boring like…. sports and now your talking my language.  Zombies are also an awesome add on.  Sports, zombie sports… see where I’m going with this?

So when you get Steampunk and add zombies to it you get the ultimate add on that you can mix with any genre and make it better, Steampunk zombies.  Imagine how much better Twilight would have been if it would have had Steampunk zombies in it instead of sparkly vampires!  Bella would have been ecstatic and would have left that loser Edward at the alter for a steaming and hissing zombie covered in cogs and pistons.

That’s good drama right there.

(Okay look, it’s 1:30 in the morning, I’m tired, and when I’m tired I write silly things….. Usually about Twilight for some weird assed reason.)

Anyway… Back to my point.  Come out to Steamfest this year and see me.  I do get lonely…. so horribly lonely.  If you come out and see me I will happily add you to the list of people I stalk.  We’ll be “Besties” and we’ll braid each other hair and junk.  (Remember I’m tired)

What?  You don’t want to see me outside your window, late at night, slathered in butter with high powered binoculars?!  Prude.
