The pastry that will raise the dead

Now I know what I want for my birthday and it sure as hell ain’t world peace.  I want a cake made to look like The Necronomicon:  The book of the dead written by the mad arab Abdul Alhazred.

Yes I know it’s not a real book, but an invention of H.P. Lovecraft for his Cthulhu mythos…… I don’t care, I want one.  And I want it in cake form.  Nothing more will satisfy me than a deliciously damned blasted tome of unknowable evil that will drive men to madness and doom….. WITH FROSTING!  GLEEEEEEEEE!

I did make a Necronomicon of my very own and that was fun, but unless I get super hungry I don’t think I’m going to try eating that one.

It’s been a while since I collected comic books. I just got frustrated with paying increasingly high prices for what felt like less and less interesting stories and art. This comic, however, looks like it might tempt me back into the fold. I do loves me some H.P. Lovecraft.

Do you ever go to youtube for something, then find so much awesomeness that you can’t contain it all…. Even with superglue. Yeah that’s happened to me this week. I was looking for one thing about the Necronomicon and found all these other goodies that I’ve had to share.

Hope you don’t mind, but I guess it’s just an H.P. Lovecraft kind of week, and so I’m raiding YouTube for content. At least I admit I have a problem, that’s the first step in getting help right?

If you live in Utah, and sadly I still do, you know exactly which book and commercial this is a parody of. I love the casual deadpan expression of the guy explaining that you’ll either “go mad from the forbidden knowledge… or you’ll be on your knees praying for a new dark age.”

I laughed myself silly when I saw this. I have to tell you when it comes to my obsessions, all things Lovecraftian runs a very very close second to zombies in my heart. In fact my webcomic very nearly became about Great Cthulhu till someone pointed out that I’m better at drawing zombies than tentacles. (Though the idea of zombies with tentacles does make me kinda salivate a bit.)
This movie was done on a shoestring budget, and is coming to the Slamdance film festival. I’m going to keep my eyes open for it so that when I see the creators I can throw handfuls of cash and give them a sensual back massages shake their hand.

In the film Jeff, a down on his luck office worker, finds out he is the last living relative of horror novelist H.P. Lovecraft. What he doesn’t know is that Lovecraft’s monsters are real and will soon threaten the very existence of mankind. Jeff and his best friend Charlie are forced to embark on a perilous adventure and they enlist the help of high school acquaintance, Paul, a self proclaimed Lovecraft specialist. Together the three unlikely heroes must protect an alien relic and prevent the release of an acient evil, known as Cthulhu.

There is something inherently terrifying about the lightless depths of the ocean. It’s an alien and unexplored world covering the majority of this planet. Who knows what could be down there, lurking…. waiting to strike us down and devour us.

I think that’s one of the reasons I enjoy H.P. Lovecrafts stories so much. It captures that nameless dread and terror of the unexplored and the unknown. However it is also thanks to his stories (and the movie “Jaws”), that I will NEVER go swiming in the ocean…. ever.
