Well Steamfest may be over, but Fandemonium is right around the corner. Having back to back conventions is proving to be quiet a challenge.

I used to read webcomic artist whine and complain about something called “Con Flu.” Well no longer. It’s awesome to go to these things, but wow they can be draining. All the prep work involved, lack of sleep, and the wall to wall talking to fans is harder than it looks. Fun though, don’t get me wrong, it’s very fun.

Anyway, Today’s comic is one of my favorite sketches brought to life through the vast power of photoshop.

And now I really really need to sleep.

Steamfest post con Wrapup

My Steamfest post con wrapup.  I’m sad to see it over.  It was a really good con for The Zombie Nation comic.  We did well.

My wife and I got there Friday and had a great location right outside the dealer’s room in their artist alley.  The foot traffic was amazing.  I think the people throwing the con were surprised by how many people attended the Steamfest convention.  Hell, I was surprised!  I had no idea how popular Steampunk was in Utah.  Let’s put it this way, I saw in a day and a half more corsets and top hats than I had previously seen in my entire life. …and I have sites bookmarked for such things.

Behind the booth we had a great time.  The great and powerful D. J. Butler (Author of the “Rock Band Fights Evil” saga) sat in with my wife and I.  We even got to hang out with Howard Taylor of Schlock Mercenary.  You can see both of us below doing our best to show our scared expressions to the camera.  Howard was pretty awesome.  Every time I talk to the man he tells me something that changes the whole dynamic of how I do my business.  He should write a book on marketing.

My only complaint with the con was that I would have loved it to be longer because I was doing so well and the heat….. Holy crap the heat.  With that many bodies and Utah’s naturally oppressive atmosphere it got pretty toasty.  Sadly with my extra thick layer of insulation (Fat) I am built for colder temperatures.  I drank three 64 ounce mugs of Mt. Dew on Friday and only went to the restrooms once.

What?  To much information.  Pfft.  It’s good for you, builds character.

Again, I was drawing people as zombies the whole time we were at Steamfest almost without breaks.  In fact I felt bad not being able to go hang out with some of our fans, but we were just so busy.  That’s a good problem to have I suppose though.

I’m still blown away by how much effort people put into their Steampunk costumes and accessories.  Some of them must have taken an incredible amount of time and money.

Just a final word.  Can’t thank the staff of Steamfest enough for having us.  It was a really great convention, totally impressed me.  I can’t wait to go back next year.

100% True Tales of a Cartoonist: Steamfest Edition

Steampunk convention odd conversations

Steamfest if over, sadly. I had a lot of fun and I’ll have to prepare a post all about it later when I’m not so tired. We had an amazing time. Got to hang out with D.J Butler, the awesome writer of the “Rock band fights evil” series.

I have some interesting conversations at conventions. Some are good, some are odd, some are just amusing.  This conversation happened almost word for word while I was hanging out with David at my zombie booth.

I’m relatively certain this lady didn’t mean to actually say that, but it struck me as so odd and funny I couldn’t stop thinking about it. What would a steampunk/victorian handy be like? I imagine a lot of steam, which leads to painful burns. Also there’s the gears and bits of brass…. That’s going to cause some serious chaffing.  You know what I bet it would just hurt. I’m going to have to pass.

Steampunk Zombies at Salt City Steamfest 2012

Steampunk Zombies at Steamfest

Steampunk Zombies are exactly what’s happening today and tomorrow at the Steamfest in Red Lion Hotel in Salt Lake City.

If you are going to be in the area come down and see me I’ll be offering decals, sketches, books, and of course zombie drawings for the convention.  Aside from Steampunk zombies you can just come down for a little Victorian futurism and see people who spend a disturbing amount of time worrying about their very elaborate goggles.

I wear glasses and I payed a ridiculous amount of money for them, but I’m telling you that pales in comparison to how much a Steampunk enthusiast spends on their goggles.

Today’s comic is actually from some magnets I created for Steamfest for their gift bags.

So if you happen to find yourself in the Salt Lake City area today and tomorrow, please stop on by and see me.  I’ll be in the Artist Alley hocking all my zombie products and desperately trying to look cool.  And if you tell me your name and buy a sketch from me I’ll happily add you to my list of people that I stalk.  See, it’s win no matter how you look at it.

Steampunk Zombies are awesome

I’ve been getting into the Steampunk genre lately and of course bringing the undead to it as much as possible.  You can see my earlier attempts at Steampunk Zombies here.  I still think that that is two genres that go pretty well together.  Just have your relentless hoard of the dead be powered by steam and you are good to go.

There’s also been some pretty good fiction cramming these two great tastes together recently that I need to pick up.  I’m not sure when I’ll be able to read them as free time is at a premium these days.

The Zombie Nation attends Conduit 2012

This weekend The Zombie Nation was able to attend the Conduit 2012 Convention in Salt Lake City.

I had a really great time meeting both fans and those I was trying to convert to fandom.  As soon as I perfect mind control I believe this task shall become easier.  Until then I will have to satisfy myself with converting people to The Zombie Nation comic one at a time.  Below you can see my booth setup and some guy taking up space behind it.  Oh wait that’s me!  Dang I’m good look’n.

We did pretty good.  My book came in from shipping two day before the convention started…. Was a tad bit stressed about that.  But it all worked out.

I got my picture taken with some of the convention goers in costume.  The force with these two was strong.

Sorry guys no post today, I’m prepping for HORRORCON 2012

Sorry guys, with all my prep work for Horrorcon 2012 I’m out of time for a comic today.

World Horrorcon 2012

Rest assured though that I’m bringing my camera and I’ll be taking as many pictures as I can for this and posting them up.

When I went to Conduit last year I got hugged by furries which I found utterly hilarious (I choose to believe it wasn’t a dude in that costume)  This year I’m hoping for hugs from goth chicks.  I will also be praying that it won’t be a dude.

Also if my wife is reading this, that is a joke, please don’t punch me.

This should be fun, and I’ll even be on  a panel about why a “Vampire is not your boyfriend.”  Little do they know I will be advocating  a zombie to be your romantic love partner.  Vampires are jerks, zombies… now that’s love.  A zombie after all is a perfectly viable choice for a boyfriend during the apocalypse.  They are loyal, they love you for your body AND your brains.  And let’s be honest, the zombie as the most relentless of the undead can not be beat in the stamina department.  Ladies, dare you say no to their cadaverous charms.

I should think not.

So if you are in the Salt Lake City area this Thursday through Sunday, stop by Horrorcon 2012 and and we can add each other to our stalking lists.  Currently my list of people that I’m stalking is reaching epic proportions, but if you show up and by my swag I’m pretty sure I can bump you higher on the list.

Imagine looking out your window and there’s a slightly pudgy and very naked man staring back at you with high powered binoculars.  That could be your new life!  Also why is he slathering himself with rich creamery butter.

It’s better if you don’t know.

Second day of Conduit convention down… One last one to go.

Zombie Decals

I have survived the second day of the Conduit Convention…. More than survived really.  This has been so much fun I may explode from it all (Yes in that gross guts flying everywhere kind of way).

Today I sold a bunch of posters and a tonne of decals.  You can see a baby zombie decal here that a lady bought and put on her iPod.  The decals are something I’ll be adding to the store in the next few days, but so far they’ve been a big hit at the cons.

I was on the radio a few times and managed to ALMOST not embarrass myself too badly.   But lets be honest I make a complete ass of myself with the same ease that others breath air and continue to convert oxygen into carbon dioxide….. It’s just what I do.

Got to again hand it to my wife, while I was out with the radio guys she was wheeling and dealing and managing the booth.  Sales always seemed to picked up when I left too……

You know what?  I think I’m bringing this operation down.  I should just have her do it.  She’s kicking my butt.
