No, the story really is quite old. Some people believe it is more or less true, I don't.

Look up Zombies: A Living History on History Channel. It's the special that I remember seeing before and it does give at least basic info on several different zombie types.

it mostly covers vampires (everything from the earliest mention of vampires to fairly recent vampire media) so you get everything from folk lore to buffy and a lot of stuff in between. I believe it also covers a few other types of undead as well
