Night Flight Comics and The Utah Arts Festivalon June 25, 2012 at 2:00 am
This weekend I was happy to be invited down to Night Flight Comics to sign copies of my book and to help support Night Flight. I was happy to do it as the owners and staff there have been super kind and supportive of my comic.
I had recently been down to their southern store for Free Comic Book Day and had a great time hanging out and doing sketches. Again, the staff their could not have been nicer to me and I’d do it again in a heart beat.
Let’s put it this way, I consider Night Flight Comics and their management to be a class act and consummate professionals, so I’m kind of perplexed and frustrated with the way the staff of the “Utah Arts Festival” treated both the owners of the comic shop and eventually me as their guest.
Bizarrly the fair staff has done their best to wall Night Flight Comics off from the area, including covering these barriers so as the to keep the store from being seen from the fair guests. Fine, I guess they’re within their rights to do that, although in my opinion that’s pretty childish. It’s gets to be quite a bit more childish when The Utah Arts Festival staff begin to move their barrier closer and closer to Night Flights store to box them in.
The owner, Mimi, was understandably irritated by that and when she AND I moved the barrier back was treated rudely by the Utah Arts Festival staff who actually threatened to call the cops on us….. For a barrier that shouldn’t be there? Again, childish.
Now here’s where it goes from childish to kind of a crazy level. I was there to sign autographs, do sketches, and generally support the store. But at the end of the day Mimi told me that the Utah Arts Festival staff had been lodging complaints that her guests (That’s me) had been harassing guests to the fair, swearing, and trying to keep people from the fair.
Keep in mind I’ve brought my Wife, my ten year old son, and my very innocent and impressionable seven year old daughter. On top of that prior to today I have never had any sort of beef with these people. Also other than being a pretty passive aggressive driver, I’m pretty non-confrontational. To say I was shocked by the accusation was a bit of an understatement.
These type of things can only ever boil down to a He said/she said kind of situation so I don’t expect anything to ever come of it, but as this is my public blog about me and my skribbl’ns I get to complain about it a bit.
I don’t know the full story behind this weird feud between Night Flight and the Utah Arts Festival but I can tell you what I’ve observed. Some very unprofessional and downright immature behavior from the staff of the festival.
So to them I say “Boo, not cool.” Also when the zombie apocalypse comes, I’m not so sure I’ll let you come over to my side of the barrier as you seem to have issues with that type of thing.
That is all.
